The John C. Stennis Space Center is a national asset that has been on the forefront of cutting edge technology for more than 35 years. Stennis Space Center is the nation's largest and most unique rocket test facility and has a leading role in commercializing remote sensing technology.
In the 1960's, the Space Center tested all first and second stages of the Apollo program's Saturn 5 rocket that carried astronauts to the moon. Since 1975, the Space Center has tested all Space Shuttle Main Engines that power the Shuttle into orbit. The Stennis Space Center is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) lead center for rocket propulsion testing and is responsible for managing all rocket test programs and for making assignments for propulsion testing at other NASA centers.
Stennis Space Center is known for its strong tradition of reinventing government. This unique federal city is now home to more than 30 federal, state, academic and private organizations, including the Headquarters for the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command which is home to the world's largest collection of advance degreed oceanographers in the world and is owner/operator of one of the world's largest and most capable super computers. In the summer of 2000, the Space Center opened a newly expanded and renovated visitors center, which brings visitors glimpses of NASA's and the Navy's Oceanographic/Meteorological roles in the new millennium. In cooperation with the NASA Stennis Space Center, Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission continues to aggressively seek opportunities to attract among the world's best high-tech companies...
