Named for John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence, Hancock County was established in 1812. Hancock County is situated on the Gulf of Mexico in the southwest corner of the state. New Orleans, Louisiana, is an hour's drive to the west, and the panhandle of Florida is only three hours to the east. Hancock County's population is 42,967 and growing; the population within a 50-mile radius is more than one million. The two incorporated cities are Bay Saint Louis (population 9,800) and Waveland (population 7,000). The quality of life in Hancock County and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is measured by its affordable amenities, including housing, cultural activities and recreational opportunities. A complete range of medical services and specialties are available in the area, including those offered locally by the modern, 60-bed Hancock Medical Center. The Coast's events are complimented by cultural and entertainment opportunities in nearby New Orleans. The two public school systems in Hancock County are actively participating in the statewide education reform effort to ensure future economic growth by improving education. In addition to its public and private schools, the county is the site of the Pearl River Community College vocational-technical training facility, located at Stennis Airpark. Nine outstanding colleges and universities are within easy commuting distance. Hancock County is served by a transportation network that includes Mississippi Highways 43 and 607, U.S. Highway 90 and Interstate 10. The county is near the major ports and airports at Gulfport, New Orleans and Mobile. Rail service is also available from the CSX system. Parcel and motor freight carriers also serve local transportation needs.
